THE BASICS- APERTURE, SHUTTER SPEED AND ISO

Step 4 - Shutter Speed
This is the actual speed that the shutter opens and closes when you press the button. It is expressed in seconds, or fractions of seconds, and the faster the shutter, obviously, the less light gets in while it is opened. As well as the exposure, or light, speed also will have an impact on blur, depending on the subject, if it is moving at all or not. For instance, if you are shooting a still life of a vase of flowers, you can afford to have a slow shutter speed (as long as the camera is stationary), but if you are shooting children at play, you will need a very fast speed.
